RIP : “kalau bukan kerana sinta”
Do you know those words? Well if you are in Sabah you would’ve probably read about this in the news recently. It was uttered by Tausang Sagunting who was then on trial on the charge of raping an 18-year old girl then. He was 80 years old.
Tausang died peacefully in his sleep last Sunday, just slightly a month after he was found not guilty of the charge. What was more remarkable was that he conducted his own defence as he had turned down offers by two lawyers to represent him.
His full statement with the “sinta” word were :
Saya tidak akun rogol, sebab saya suka sama suka, sama dia, saya tidak dapat kacau sama dia, kalau bukan kerana sinta (cinta) (I don’t admit raping her, because we are in love. I cannot disturb her if not because of love) - [Source]
Though his trial didn’t generate as much “fad” as Gintak Gabui more than 10 years ago, the use of the word “sinta”, as opposed to the correct pronounciation “cinta” can be heard being used in humorous jest here and there.
Do you know that he spoke dusun during the trial? One of his defences line, asreported in the news follows
“Nokuro tu au dau pinoruput tontok do korogol, soira pod minontian om man nogi dau poruputo? (Why didn’t the woman report when she was allegedly raped. Why only when she got pregnant did she make the report?
I think if I was there - I would smile when I hear those words uttered in a courtroom. His objection and statement was translated by the court’s Kadazandusun interpreter.
Rest in Peace mamai. Your name has been cleared though your words will always be remembered.

By the way.. is Gintak still alive?
The only thing I’ve hear about Gintak’s famous words were:
“Sabar, peminat..” when he was met outside the courtroom during his trial. Dunno true or not..

I really don’t know if he’s innocent or not, but for an 80 year old man, he sure still has ‘it’ … LOL! I actually never heard of this story, most probably cos I’m not a sabahan

Gintak Gabui really did say “sabar peminat”? I think Gintak’s case must’ve been at the latest 1990, because I climbed Mount Kinabalu that year and I saw his name spraypainted on a rock/wall near the summit. The fact that the mere mention of his name evokes smirks/laughter and has a certain meaning to it means that he has well and truly entered Sabahan folklore. Your truly has deemed Gintak’s purported comment and the late Tausang’s 2 comments to be worthy to be entered in my Quotes of The Year Hall of Fame at http://www.pinolobu.com/mediawiki/index.php/Quotes_of_the_year
Pls help me maintain it, as you wish
Note: Tausang was even older than Gintak when he was on trial, or same age?

Bila fikir about his statement, why report kalau sudah pregnant? I guess it does make sense after all…

I was in KL when all these happened. But the minute I arrived back in Sabah for holidays, I remember my friends using sentences like “..apa juga kau buat di KL tu? Mogintak saja kah kau?” (so what on earth do you do in KL? Just ‘mogintak’ all the time?) which led to my knowledge of the case.
Btw, rest in peace to mamai also.

mrbadak: to have an authoratitative post, need to go to Jab Arkib and dig out Daily Express / Borneo Post / Borneo Mail circa 1990. I only remember seeing a grainy pic of him in the paper then.
