RIP : “kalau bukan kerana sinta”

Do you know those words? Well if you are in Sabah you would’ve probably read about this in the news recently. It was uttered by Tausang Sagunting who was then on trial on the charge of raping an 18-year old girl then. He was 80 years old.

Tausang died peacefully in his sleep last Sunday, just slightly a month after he was found not guilty of the charge. What was more remarkable was that he conducted his own defence as he had turned down offers by two lawyers to represent him.

His full statement with the “sinta” word were :

Saya tidak akun rogol, sebab saya suka sama suka, sama dia, saya tidak dapat kacau sama dia, kalau bukan kerana sinta (cinta) (I don’t admit raping her, because we are in love. I cannot disturb her if not because of love) - [Source]

Though his trial didn’t generate as much “fad” as Gintak Gabui more than 10 years ago, the use of the word “sinta”, as opposed to the correct pronounciation “cinta” can be heard being used in humorous jest here and there.

Do you know that he spoke dusun during the trial? One of his defences line, asreported in the news follows

“Nokuro tu au dau pinoruput tontok do korogol, soira pod minontian om man nogi dau poruputo? (Why didn’t the woman report when she was allegedly raped. Why only when she got pregnant did she make the report?

I think if I was there - I would smile when I hear those words uttered in a courtroom. His objection and statement was translated by the court’s Kadazandusun interpreter.

Rest in Peace mamai. Your name has been cleared though your words will always be remembered.
