Che’Nelle - placing Sabah on the entertainment world map
I’ve just read about this lass from Putatan, Che’Nelle or real name, Cheryline Lim on the news today. Born to a Chinese Malaysian father and Kadazan mother (if wikipedia is right), she’s a sino-kadazan just like me (though I am 3/4 kaduz). According to the local papers, her father is chinese while her mom is mixed Indian+Dutch (thanks Pinolobu and Joan). I saw her mom’s pic on myspace and I think wiki got it wrong. Together with her family, she moved to Australia when she was 10.
Anyway since I’ve never heard of her before, I searched online and was pleasantly surprised to see the results. She’s on the right track to make a name for herself on the international scene.
Already signed up to New York-based label Virgin Records America, the same label as Lenny Kravitz, Janet Jackson and Ben Harper, it is most surprising to know that she was discovered through her myspace page.
Her debut album “Things Happen For A Reason” is due out on the 28th of August and almost entirely self-written. Her current single “I fell in love with the DJ” is making waves among the club scenes in UK.
‘I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE DJ,’ the exuberant call to the dance floor by CHE’NELLE, with a featured vocal appearance by dancehall star CHAM (”Ghetto Story”), is one of the fastest-breaking tunes at mainstream pop and rhythmic radio, bringing both heat and refreshment to the clubs and airwaves of Summer 2007. You can listen to her song on her official website or watch the videos at the end of this post. It’s really catchy all right. I hope she makes it in the tough entertainment world and I hope she doesn’t forget her roots!
Sabah can really produce good singers huh? Year after year, Sabahans will always create some buzz in the local entertainment industry especially those reality talent quest shows. Just recently, Sabahan Reynaldo Raymond won this year’s Suara Emas Bintang RTM 2007.
When Che’Nelle is already established, she could help give more exposure to our local talents as well. Probably giving them a chance to appear on her album, I don’t know, probably Atama could ride on her success as well hehe.
Anyway, hopefully she makes it and make us all proud - though I’m already proud reading her success so far!

yes che’nelle …winner One in a million second session kali nie from putatan sabah. Vocal dia memang power..memang hebat judges pun salute vocal dia. Nama dia Ayu Damit, he competed with the other two Malaysian singers (Siti Sarah and Shila) masa final and lastly Siti Sarah voted out before grand final. So Masa Grand final tu…she competed with Shila. And she (Ayu) won…!!!! yeahhhhh!!!!!! so happy because lots of sabahan became recording artiste so far…but u know..a bit bias kalau di malaysia nie…most of the singers from borneo will be di anak tiri…pity them..
