Sandcastles
Have you ever tried to make some sandcastles at the beach? Well I’ve tried just once. I gave up when one of my cousins “accidentally” stomped on my first tower. He didn’t even wait for me to finish the whole blueprint.
Anyway, here are some nice pictures of sandcastles taken from the International Sandcastle Building contest at Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia.
For more pictures, check out the links at the end of this post.
Looking at these pictures made me wonder how they do it.
The answer is obvious of course, they use water and sand. The sand need to compacted using heavy tools. Tamping (press down tightly) is done on them.

Tamping in progress
During contests and art shows, they need to preserve the sculpture against the rain and wind, so the sand is mixed with water and glue.
They use “forms” (buckets or containers without top or bottom) to form the sculpture and then carve them into finer details.

Serious sand castle building
Do you know that these sand builders call themselves “sand sculptors”.
