1 million sterling pounds burned on purpose

burn money
Anyone remember “The KLF” pop group? I can still recall their single “3AM Eternal” eventhough I first heard it back in my secondary school (probably because I have the mp3 hehe).

It started with a machine gun followed by a voice saying “This is Radio Freedom”. Then a female voice started to sing “KLF! unh huh, unh huh, unh huh, unh huh”.

It continues to :
KLF is gonna rock you
are you ready (unh huh, unh huh) [ANCIENTS OF MU MU]

Okay never mind if you don’t know them. Anyway, since we don’t have the internet back then, I didn’t know the following story.

When the KLF duo of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty disbanded their pop act, they also decided to burn their remaining cash profit they made, totalling 1 million british pound sterling!

That was because they didn’t know what to do with the money.

Initially the KLF’s earnings were to be distributed by way of a fund for struggling artists managed by the K Foundation, Drummond and Cauty’s new post-KLF art project, but, said Drummond, “We realised that struggling artists are meant to struggle, that’s the whole point.”

Ooo-kay.

So instead of giving it to needy charities and after their art exhibition involving the money was lame as it didn’t spark any interest from any art galleries, they decided another form of art - the art of burning.

They burned the money on an island, recorded it as a documentary (with the a non-creative title “Watch the K Foundation Burn a Million Quid”) and recorded viewers’ reaction during public screenings.

The above picture is a stillshot from the movie.

If I was a viewer, I would give a very negative response to their so-called “art”. It shows, though you may be good and talented with music, you can be an idiot if given loads of cash.

Anyway, old news I know. Just want to share with you. If you want to see a short clip of them burning the money, watch the trailer for a DVD below (only a few minutes long). Their act is at the end of the clip.
