Internet marketing

So a few weeks ago I finished creating this one website project for a government department. Then after I uploaded the site, the client called me up and told me a problem.

He says that he typed in a keyword under Google and found out his site wasn’t on the first page. He asked me why.

I said it is very hard to get on the first page of Google, even if the page is nicely designed and with quality contents. I told him the most effective way was to get other related sites to link back to our site so the Google robot can crawl from there and include it in their index.

He asked if I can do it within that same week. I told him that is next to impossible as I don’t control Google’s robot. However, I said we can pay other webmasters to link to the site.

Then he sounded a little hostile. Probably he thinks I want to get more money from his company’s wallet. And it seems to him that all these talk of Google’s robot crawling the web was stuff made up in my head. I’m sure he thinks I want him to imagine some robots from the Terminator movie crawling some gigantic spider web between the KLCC twin towers.

Just to value the client-company relationship, I told him I will ask my webmaster friends to link to the site :^O

I feel bad for these high ranking officers. Really excited over the web but sometimes it is hard to explain to them the whole picture. This officer also told me “hundreds of people will want to search for their site, if it doesn’t appear in google, nobody will come by to visit”. Ooo-kay.

So I told him to let his prospective visitors to type in his *exact* company name and maybe add the city name to it, sure will appear but give it a few weeks. I’m crossing my fingers it will appear then.

I don’t know what will happen if I give them a quotation for another kind of services, which is virtual marketing. Just like this San Diego internet marketing company.

They have separate prices for web development, advertising and search engine optimization.

If I put this under my quotation, nobody will take this up. At least the local clients lah.
