Tips on saving car petrol for dummies
Okay since we are like lame ducks just waiting for the petrol price to increase, there are actually some common-sense tips that can actually save our fuel usage. Here are a few which i found on the net.
1. Keep your car in tune.
Don’t skip your car’s service when they’re due. A poorly maintained engine can cut your petrol mileage up to 20 percent. Even a clogged air filter alone can cause up to a 10 percent increase in fuel consumption.
2. Remove unnecessary weight
The heavier the car, the more fuel is needed to move it. So remove what is not needed. You might find the missing 12-pound bowling ball in there. You can even try to lose weight (which will save you in terms of food costs as well).
3. Pump up your tires
Under-inflated tires require more energy to roll, which not only wastes fuel but also wears the tires faster. Check that your tires are inflated to their capacity.
4. Tighten up that gas cap.
Gas will evaporate from your car’s gas tank if it has an escape especially under our hot tropical sun. Be sure to tighten up that gas cap each time you fuel up your car (remember, turn it clock-wise to close and anti-clockwise to open (kan mimi?)

5. Park under the shade.
The hot sun that makes the inside of your car feel like sauna also dry the fuel from your gas tank.
6. Learn the art of Smooth Driving
Smooth and steady driving makes the best use of your fuel. Avoid hard acceleration or braking and maintain a steady pace in top gear because varying your speed a lot wastes fuel. If you can see that you need to stop in front, don’t step on the gas. Your car in motion will continue to push it, besides the traffic might move before you reached the traffic tail, which in turn will save you in fuel because you don’t have to move your car from an idle position.
7. Don’t fill your car when its hot outside
Fill up when the temperature is cooler because when you’re filling up, not much gas will get evaporised and vanish into the air comparing if you do it at noon. Visit the gas station in the evening or at night.
8. Avoid traffic jam *duh*
Easier said that done. Go to work early or go home a little bit later. For a start, just pick a day or two in a week to go to work early. You might enjoy the free drive early in the morning. Park your car and then have breakfast nearby your workplace.
9. Car-pool!
Organise a car pool party if you have colleagues living in the same area, however you might want to reconsider if they are really fat people (refer to #2 above).

10. Decrease your air-cond usage
If you have air conditioning, use it only when you really need it. Running the air conditioner robs power from the engine and uses additional fuel.
11. Don’t step on the gas when stopping
I know some people who will step on their gas after they’ve parked their car, announcing their arrival by emitting carbon monoxide on the surrounding areas (usually done by those with modified exhaust pipes as large as their egos). What they’re doing is just wasting petrol.
12. Don’t loiter
Waiting for someone in the car? If it takes more than a minute, then you might as well shut the engine off.
I hope they’re practical enough. If you have any more tips, let me know ![]()
