Geocities to close

Yahoo! has announced that they will close down the free web hosting and web development tool GeoCities later this year. Though I never used that service anymore, it gave me the opportunity to build my first website which was for the Sabah football team back in 1997. Yahoo! bought GeoCities in 1999.

Back then, domain names and web hosting were super expensive, only big companies can afford them. Now, Sabah Rhinos has its own domain name and web hosting.

I forgot already what was my Geocities name, I know there was Colleseum in it. If you were to use Geocities’ service, you had to choose a name structure like this “www.geocities.com/Sports/Colloseum/4228″ hehe.

Hmmm the memories. Ah well this is just my personal tribute and thanks to GeoCities.

I remembered mine was TheTropics, then CapeCanaveral, then College(something), and lastly it was another something. The horrible thing was, when I deleted the site in TheTropics, someone else took that address and put a big, animated, photo-real image of a guy-dong @ p3 n15! Worse, I forgot to e-mail my friends that I have chged my web site address! They were in for a shock of their lives.

Hehehe.. i still remember i have my old old website.. and dunno still valid or not… but i learn a lot especially the basic HTML lols :)

  3. Yes, what a pity. No one (even the seasoned webmasters) ever thought such prestigious site would close. Many have benefited the free services eg from school, clubs to surprisingly big organizations.

Hope Yahoo management would seriously re-consider it.
They just need new breed of experts to enhance the facilities and features. There is a HUGE market for such free website services.

I and my colleagues deeply feel they should not close it down.
That’s our vote. Please help to campaign for it not to close down.

  4. Oops, forgot to mention our new website.
