I don’t know how to start this post but probably a sincere apology to the loyal visitors of giuk.net for the abrupt shut down of the website since last week. The site was suspended by the host for eating too much of the bandwidth resources which was a surprise to me since a few days before that, I optimised the database and deleted entries that were older than 3 months.
From the logs, one script was doing all the eating and it was actually suppose to run once per hour but someone, somewhere figured out the name of the script and made numerous requests directly to it. I don’t want to assume that his intention was bad but I can’t shake off that feeling.
I suppose I could improve the script myself but to tell you the truth, the back-end php script engine’s source code is pretty messed up for my taste and looking at my life as a daddy to a few months’ old baby, a full-time programmer and also maintaining a lot of other sites, I have to confess that I don’t have enough time to tinker the code for this project.
Revenue-wise, giuk.net is also the lowest income-generating online project. I only get paid for the Nuffnang ads and TLA. While adsense only bring in a few dollars each month. So understandably, this site is not on my top of the list of favourite projects.
So where do we go from here? Well for one, I will not kill the project (yet), the domain is not expiring soon so I might as well play with this for a while. I have always thought having a digg-clone website but covering Sabah-related content.
That will be the path for giuk and by May, I will know if I want to keep it up and just let it die in peace. I would love to hear any feedback though.

I am not sure how is your script work but if it rely on cron, you need a hardware upgrade. Consider dedicated/semi-dedicated/VPS and a donation routine.
I myself is facing this hardware problem with (socmedia.com.my). Eventhough it now runs on a VPS, the RAM and CPU still below par to handle the massive request of the forum software and the page loading still noticeably sluggish. My dream is to buy a server but that require around RM4K and RM400 per month maintenance.

VPS should do it for giuk.net. You can try one month and if you’re not satisfy, got money back guarantee. try ipserverone.com VPS3 around RM267 / month with 1G CPU and 512MB RAM or shinjiru.com.my VPS package but I dun have experience with them though so I dun know how reliable they are. Exabytes VPS package is expensive in my opinion.

Only managed to catch up on my blog-hopping.
I actually prefer giuk.net stay as an aggregator, but like you said, kalau ndada modal buat apa. Mmm… if you need anyone to take care of the site as an aggregator, kasi sia sija; I’ll set it up under PHP instead of ASPX, then we do 50-50 revenue hahahah!!
Otherwise, I think of doing an aggregator like giuk, coz I really miss the blogs featured there. Penat mau subscribe to each one, lagipun since hosting sia pun kena sponsor, apa lagi! Good luck!

hey waddup ppl…
im really tied down with office projects this.. anyhoo, just some updates on giuk. surprisingly I got 3 offers on giuk, including Lorna from the comments (itupun if she was serious).
another offer is from a host provider from KL (not exabytes), which is free hosting in return for top banner on every page. however, i will have to do all the work myself.
another offer is a sabahan dude, with an offer just like Lorna’s. however i will need to help him setup since he’s a newbie in php/web, i will also need to provide hosting/domain but revenue is like 80-20, the bigger one goes to me. he’s in it for the experience. with a plan to come up with his own site in the future.
i’m still thinking over this matter while hoping someone would step all over the other bidders with RM1 million on the table. I would rather give this to someone who will do all by herself/himself, while I “shake my legs” and wait for the $ to come in.
stay tuned.

So Lorna the new ‘Giuk Master’… are we supposed to do anything? I hope we don’t have to resubmit or anything..
