Reading from the “evidence” from this site, makes me think so to. The said original story here is “Kimba The White Lion” from Japan and produced in 1965. It seems that Disney plan was to re-make the story line but some legal wrangles prohibited them to do so.
Since they’ve started the process already, they just went ahead with the film but gave it a different title and claim it as their own “original story”. Kimba then became Simba.
Embarassing – and to think that this movie made me teary eyed!
Here are some side-by-side comparison of some of the movie’s key moments.
Kimba’s aunt on the left, Disney’s villain is the uncle, Scar.
Right before our hero was dropped to the valley below.
And both departed fathers appearing in the clouds.
There are many other similarities, including the characters and statements from the people who worked on the show.

That Japanese version looks so familiar. I think I must have seen it s a kid.
