A harrier aircraft had to land without its landing gear, so to soften the impact they had this idea of using multiple mattresses tied down to the runway. I think I’ve seen the same solution in a cartoon somewhere. Click on the jump to see what happens.

The aircraft touched down just before the mattresses and they were sucked into the engine. Poor mattresses.
