Starting next year 2009, the internet will be shaken from its core. A few hours ago, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved the creation of thousands of top-level domain names from the current 250.

What that means is, no more will you hear .com or .net, but .bank (for banks) or .pepsi (for brand names).

Under the new system, the web’s 1.3 billion users would be able from 2009 to buy an unlimited number of generic addresses based on common words, brands or company names, cities or proper names.

Wow - if they are opening up for .rhinos then I would get it for my site www.sabah.rhinos from the current www.sabahrhinos.com hehe.

But in reality advanced technical skills and deep pockets would be needed to set up a new name.

Industry experts expect the cost — which has yet to be fixed — could reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Tens of thousands? Okay I think I’ll be contempt with .com then.
