Toby Eaton-Baudains, 29 was an officer with Raleigh International. He lost his life in an accident in Sandakan last monday. Raleigh International is a British-based volunteer group that helps young people gain confidence and leadership by doing charity and voluntary work across the globe.
I’m in no way connected to Raleigh or even participated in their programmes but I do read about their projects in the rural areas of Sabah. I think they are a group of unsung heroes in our state.
Many times their achievement in building bridges and installing gravity-based water system for the rural folks who don’t have any proper water system weren’t highlighted enough.
I am glad that their operation doesn’t have to go through the black and white procedures of the government, these are the actual people who “turun padang” (go down to the field) and help those in need. And doing this so far away from their homes really shows their strength and honesty.
Rest In Peace Toby Eaton-Baudains, probably you’ve already done enough. Thanks for the work.

Yeah…Toby. What you’ve been doing was for a genuine cause from a sincere heart. We Sabahans are extremely grateful. We’re sure too that your family is proud of all the deeds you’ve done for those unfortunates rural folks.
Well…how about our political leaders? I guess they need help too!On how to be touched by sufferings faced by the kampong folks.
I don’t know if I can actually do what he did. It takes so much passion and determination to do such great work. I’m sure there are many unsung heroes out there that need to be told about…?
Our political leaders only show up during election time…
Ya lo…Nessa. But the sad thing is many stupid idiots still vote them into office. Even more stupid is if a Sabahan vote for a leader whose party is not local! Sedihhhh akuuuu….uhuk…uhuk…uhuk… :(
Itu laa Tombivo… Ko pigi stand for election la. I vote for U ..ekekekeke
Wa….Nessa, ya ka? But cannot la, cos i’ll be against many corrupted politicians and their stupid policies. Consequence is……the government will brand me anti-federal and detain me under ISA. Chiss….padahal am only trying to safeguard what is ours ba kannnnn?
tombivo, as long our media is being controlled, thats how long our sabahan bros and sisters will be blinded. imagine if the kampung folks have access to the net – im sure the situation will be a little bit different.
Hey guys thats really nice of you all to say.. I worked with Toby and am one of 3 sabahans who work for Raleigh International.
mrbadak…talk about the kampung folks. They’re our only group of people(mostly) who STILL often say “he’s our people from our party, we should support them…”. How patriotic are they compared to the more educated youngers…who mostly don’t mind kissing others’ assess as long as it helps to make their pocket fat…i dread to think what’s going to happen to our younger generations one day. :(
Mia – you shld be proud of your self for your volunteer work :)
Yes, Mia. Keep up the good work!
I heard the news about this tradjedy today, my sympathies are with his family and everyone who knew Toby. I volunteered with Raleigh on the Malaysia 06E expedition, and if this expedition was like the one I experienced then I hope that every venturer and staff member is coping, because I am sure that Toby would have made strong bonds with many people there.
